How to Figure Out the Lift on a Jeep
The majority of Jeep drivers tend to upgrade their Wranglers with lift kits and suspension upgrades to improve on and off-road performance. Therefore, when you buy a used Jeep, it is highly likely that your vehicle will come with an aftermarket lift, potentially of an unknown variety. Before you can assess the quality of your lift kit, or make additional upgrades, you have to determine the lift height of your vehicle. Luckily, taking the right measurements and completing the calculations takes very little time and effort once you know what to do.
Suspension Lift Vs. Body Lift
You will need to determine if your vehicle has a suspension lift, body lift, or both before starting to take any measurements. A basic body lift allows you to upgrade your tire and rim size, but you won’t gain any extra clearance under the frame. A full suspension lift increases the distance between the axles and the frame to improve ground clearance height, ride quality, and handling.
To spot a basic body lift, look for the presences of spacers and blocks that are designed to lift the body away from the frame. If your Jeep has these spacers and no other suspension upgrades, then only a body lift was performed. A suspension lift, on the other hand, requires the installation of purpose-built components, including adjustable control arms and track bars, modified drive shafts, and custom shocks. These two lift types are even regularly combined to maximize the ride height of custom Jeep vehicles.
Measurements for Determining Lift
To take accurate measurements, park your lifted Wrangler on a completely flat and level surface to balance its weight evenly. Line up a tape measure along one of your front coil springs to record its total height. Subtract 12 inches to find the lift amount above stock height. Repeat this procedure for one of the rear coil springs, but only subtract eight inches from the total length.
Remember to check for blocks and spacers at the front and rear to determine the existence and height of a body lift. If you find any, measure the spacer height and add it to the respective measurements for the front and rear of your custom Jeep. Once you find your total lift height, you can begin assessing the quality of your suspension components and the workmanship of the installer.
Assess Quality of Parts and Workmanship
Not all lift kits are built equally. It pays to check the quality of your parts and workmanship before spending a lot of time in your lifted Jeep. This step is particularly important if you measure your lift at over four inches. This is because that height tends to change the steering geometry, resulting in bump steer and other poor handling situations.
You should note high-quality adjustable track bars and control arms on all lift heights. At above four inches in height, a modified driveshaft and steering correction upgrades should be installed to maintain the proper steering geometry. To verify good workmanship, perform a thorough double check to verify that your suspension and lift kit components are correctly installed and tightened down to the appropriate specs.
